DOHENY NOTES - (Number of times read: 1047)

PRO | Tuesday 1 April 2014

The Doheny U21 Footballers were comprehensively beaten by Clonakilty on Sunday afternoon last on a score-line of 1-16 to 0-07 in the semi-final of the West Cork Championship. The game was competitive for forty minutes but a well taken Clonakilty goal early in the 2nd half drove a major wedge between the teams.  Clonakilty pulled away from that moment on, taking advantage of the open spaces, as the Doheny men chased the game.  Clon ran out deserved victors in the end.  Clonakilty were quicker out of the blocks at the start of the game racing to a 3 point lead before the men in green registered their first score from a Jack O’Connor 45.  The Dohenys in fact had a greater share of possession for large parts of the first half but failed to convert it into scores, missing a number of handy points.  Furthermore the Clonakilty goalkeeper had to pull off a great save to deny Eoin Lavers a goal.  It was feared at the time that the Dohenys would rue these missed opportunities and that turned out to be the case as Clonakilty proved to be more economical in front of goal.  Clon finished the half the stronger kicking 2 quick points in succession on the stroke of half time to lead on a score-line 0-07 to 0-04.  Dohenys had an uphill battle in the 2nd half, trailing by 3 points and playing against a stiff breeze.  Points were exchanged on the resumption of the second half but Clonakilty’s goal proved the killer blow to the Doheny’s challenge.  Dohenys pushed forward to get back in the game but left huge space in their back line which Clonakilty diligently exploited.  Clonakilty will now go on to face Castlehaven in the West Cork Final which has been fixed for Dunmanway this Friday evening at 8pm. This game will be preceded by the Dr. Michael Herlihy Cup Final between Mount St. Michael of Rosscarbery & Hamilton High of Bandon at 6pm.
Unfortunately for this Doheny U21 team this is the end of the road with regards to the 2014 championship.  The Dunmanway men could have very little complaints on this occasion.   Clonakilty were just a better side on the day, a more balanced team, stronger and more clinical in front goal.  On a positive note the team had a good win over a much fancied Newcestown in the opening round of the Championship, the first win in the grade since 2010.  The team is still relatively young in that only 3 players out of the starting 15 will be over age for the 2015 Championship.  These players should continue to train over the summer months, improve their skill levels and regroup in 2015 to have another crack of the U21 Championship. The Club would like to wish John Forbes a speedy recovery from the knee he sustained during the game.
