COUNTY FINAL - (Number of times read: 1281)
Friday 12 October 2018
Sam
Maguires 0-13 Eire Óg 1-11
The
bare minimum was all that separated the sides after a pulsating Premier 2A
Minor hurling final in Cloughduv on Wednesday night last. Our lads had
the aid of the strong wind in the first half and drew first blood with a
Nathan O'Donovan point after a minute. Further points from Fionn Herlihy(2)
Eoin O'Donovan and Bill Murphy(3) free saw them lead by 2 pts approaching
half time. However a well struck ground stroke from Eire Óg's Rian
Flynn resulted in a green flag and left the HT score at Sam Maguires
0-7 Eire Óg 1-5.
In
all truth the signs were ominous with our lads facing the stiff breeze in the
second half. But as is their wont, this team rose to the challenge and the
second half was tit for tat with points from Donnacha Collins, Fionn
Herlihy and Bill Murphy (2) leaving Sams one point to the good with ten
minutes to go. This hard fought encounter ended in a welter of excitement. Eire
Óg levelled with four minutes remaining and added two more points to lead by 2
heading into injury time. Bill Murphy pulled one back however Eiro Óg struck
again to re-establish their 2 point lead with the clock ticking down. Sams
were not fininished yet and a trademark Fionn Herlihy solo run ended with a
fine effort which unfortunately was saved by the Eire ÓG custodian. Bill Murphy
narrowed the margin to 1 point again in the fourth minute of injury time and
despite the best efforts of our lads they could not find an
eqauliser. It was a great 2nd half performance in particular from our lads and
the least it deserved was a draw.
They did
not get the bounce of the ball on the night, but cannot be faulted for
effort, they have given us great entertainment all year in both hurling
and football and all involved should be proud of themselves.
