Charleville march on in Co
Under 21 AFC
Charleville 2 – 7
Doheny's 0 - 10
Charleville had a close but deserved win over Doheny's in
the Co Under 21 A FC at Blarney. In the 7th minute the winners authority was
reflected on proceedings when a movement involving Jack Meade, Sean and Conor
Buckley saw Aaron O'Connor score a very good goal. Doheny's opened their
account in the 9th minute when Fionn Herlihy pointed. However it was all
Charleville at this stage. Aaron O'Connor added a point before a solo run by
Tom Hanley resulted in Cillian Dore getting his sides second goal.
Doheny's backline tightened up while at the other end their forwards came more
into the game. Mark Buckley and Fionn Herlihy impressed in the full forward
line and two pointed frees by Buckley by the 19th minute reduced the margin to
2-1 to 0-3. The remainder of the half was keenly contested. Eamon O'Sullivan
and Mark Buckley swapped a point. In the 22nd minute Sean Buckley set up Cathal
O'Carroll who pointed. This score was quickly cancelled out when Keith White
kicked over. In the closing moments both teams added another point
as Charleville held a 2-4 to 0-6 interval lead.
On the changeover the winners were quick off the mark. Jack
Callaghan pointed a free and they moved 2-6 to 0-6 clear by the 37th minute
when Aaron O'Connor pointed. As the half went the Doheny's challenge
gathered momentum with Padraig O'Mahony, Jerry O'Farrell, Cullen Barry, Bill
Murphy, Keith White, Mark Buckley and Fionn Herlihy catching the eye. Two
points in quick succession by Fionn Herlihy and Bill Murphy reduced the margin
to 2-6 to 0-8. Charleville responded with a point in the 45th minute when Jack
Callaghan pointed a free. In a thrilling finish Doheny's surged forward they
found it difficult to break down a well organised Charleville defence. In the
55th minute they got through the Charleville rearguard but a massive save by
keeper Jessie Smith denied Bill Murphy. Doheny's continued to push forward but it
was a Charleville backline that held firm despite being under severe pressure.
Mark Buckley added two more points for the Dunmanway outfit. It was Charleville
who had some outstanding performances by Jessie Smith, Jack Meade, Jack Doyle,
Cathal O'Carroll, Conor Buckley, Tim Hawe, Tom Hanley, Jack O'Callaghan, Sean
Buckley and Aaron O'Connor that held on for a deserved win.
