Doheny GAA Notes:-
Playing Activity (June)
Junior A Football- Dubliner Cheese Carbery/Beara League Cup- DOHENYS
v Kilmeen- Tuesday 08/06/2021
Half-Time Score: - Dohenys 1-4 v
0-7 Kilmeen
Full-Time Score: - Dohenys 1-6 v
0-15 Kilmeen
After the long lay-off due to
COVID-19 restrictions, adult playing activity recommenced with the Junior A
Footballers kicking off their League campaign with a fixture against neighbours
Kilmeen in the Sam Maguire Park. On a damp and dreary June evening, Dohenys
were slow to get going and Kilmeen dominated early exchanges. When Dohenys
eventually settled mid-way through the first half, they had their best spell of
the game playing some very good football. This very good spell of play
corresponded with a marked increase in Dohenys work-rate and application of
pressure on Kilmeen. Dohenys registered points from Gareth Crowley (2), Ray
Jennings and Alan Brickley. The latter from Alan Brickley a great score, side
of the boot far out by the hill side. The Doheny goal came after a great team
move with Gareth Crowley dispatching the ball to the Kilmeen net. Going into
the break, Dohenys were level.
Kilmeen controlled proceedings in
the Second Half and were wasteful in front of goal registering a lot of wides. While
Dohenys will be disappointed with the second half, they can take a good number
of positives from the game. Josh Burke, James Blewett and Adrian Cronin showed
extremely well. Aidan O Donovan worked tirelessly constantly being at the
centre of good Doheny moves.
Team:- Darren Kelly, Kevin
Cotter, Tadhg O’Leary, Adrian Cronin, James Blewitt, Declan Collins, Ciarán
Kelleher, Darragh Collins, Gareth Crowley (1-2), Padraig O Mahony, Aidan O’
Donovan, Josh Burke, Alan Crowley, Alan Brickley (0-3, 0-2f), Ray Jennings (0-1f)

Senior A Football- Cork Credit Unions League DOHENYS v Nemo Rangers-
Wednesday 09/06/2021
Half Time Score: - 3-7 v 0-4
Full Time Score: - 5-10 v 1-6
The Seniors kicked off their
League campaign when Nemo’s second string made the mid-week journey from the
City. It is rare to see a weak Nemo selection at any level but Dohenys will be
happy with the excellent quality of football displayed. Dohenys opening point
was a great team score- showing great patience. Cullan Barry registered the
point after a huge number of phases- Dohenys constantly taking stock and taking
the right options during the move. Throughout the First Half, the movement of
the inside line was impressive and a leggy Nemo struggled to contend with the pace
and quick thought of the Doheny attack. Dohenys kicked a number of good points
with excellent interlink play. Dohenys were also clinical registering three
goals before the half-time whistle. The second of which was buried to the net
by Mark Buckley after an excellent cross field pass by Eoin Lavers caught the
Nemo full back line napping. Dohenys went into the half time break totally in
command of the game and out of sight.
Fionn Herlihy and Mark Buckley
added two further goals in the second half. Nemo rarely troubled the Dohenys rear-guard.
On one of the only occasions they threatened the Doheny net, Dohenys will be disappointed
at the ease to which Nemo created the goal chance. Credit to Darren Kelly in
goal who made an outstanding double save. The second of which saw Kelly show
excellent agility to flick the rebound away from the onrushing Nemo attacker.
Dohenys were delighted with the result and the performance particularly in the
First Half.

Junior A Hurling- Dubliner Cheese Carbery Hurling League DOHENYS v
St. James’ – Sunday 13/06/2021
Half Time Score: - Dohenys 1-5 v
2-4 St. James’
Full Time Score: - Dohenys 1-13 v
2-12 St. James’
The Junior A Hurlers opened their
hurling league campaign with a game against St. James’ in the Sam Maguire Park
on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning. In a tight and close game, Dohenys will be
happy with some of the good hurling played. St. James’ started the game the better
registering two goals before the First Water Break. Credit to Dohenys un-phased
by the concessions, they felt their way into the game and knuckled down against
a strong full forward, centre forward axis from St. James’. Scores from Jerry
McCarthy (0-3), Fionn Herlihy and Ciarán Kelleher settled Dohenys. The
wing-back Kelleher’s point being a superb long range effort. Dohenys will be
delighted by the great response to the concession of the goals and registered a
goal of their own after the water-break. Barry Donovan pulling a hopping ball
into the roof of the net after some great work by full-forward James White.
Dohenys went in at the break two points down and played some of their best
hurling on the resumption. Fionn Herlihy’s strong running being a prominent
feature. Herlihy setup Declan Collins for a good point. Jerry Collins
capitalised on a poor St. James’ puck-out sailing the sliotar over the bar. While
Barry Donovan and Stephie Collins both scored great angled points from the hill
side into the Pavilion goal. St. James’ continued to keep the score board
ticking over themselves and just about held out to leave Dunmanway with the two
league points.

Junior A Football- Dubliner Cheese Carbery/Beara League Cup DOHENYS
v Diarmuid Ó Mathúnas- Sunday 20/06/2021
Half Time Score: - Dohenys 0-3 v
0-6 Mathúnas
Full Time Score: - Dohenys 0-10 v
0-9 Mathúnas
The Doheny Junior A Footballers
resumed their League Cup campaign with a good hard-fought win over near
neighbours Mathúnas. Darragh Collins, Alan Brickley and Gareth Crowley did the
scoring for Dohenys in the First Half. The latter point from Crowley coming
from a free after good work by Denis Moran. Dohenys upped their performance
considerably in the Second Half. Gareth Crowley scored a great point on the
resumption of the game. Kevin Murphy brought on as a Second Half sub made a
significant impact. Shortly after
Murphy’s introduction, Dohenys had the ball in the Mathúnas net after a great
team move. Unfortunately, the referees whistle sounded and the goal was ruled
out and brought back for a free which Alan Brickley converted. The next Doheny
score came from Alan Crowley who ably manufactured space kicking a great point.
The score at the second water break was 0-7 points apiece with all to play for.
The closing exchanges were tight and tense. A feature of the game was the tight
and pacey defending demonstrated by Josh Burke. Kevin Cotter, Alan Murray and
Declan Collins also defended well. Padraig O Mahony carried a huge amount of
ball. While Aidan O’ Donovan linked the play excellently. It was left to Alan
Brickley to kick the final and winning point- an outstanding score which sealed
the win for Dohenys.

Senior A Football- Cork Credit Unions League Glanworth v DOHENYS-
Sunday 27/06/2021
Half-Time Score- Dohenys 1-10 v
1-3 Glanworth
Full-Time Score:- Dohenys 1-17 v
0-7 Glanworth
The Doheny Senior Footballers
resumed their League campaign with a long journey to North Cork for a league
game on a Sunday afternoon with Glanworth. After a minutes silence due to a
local bereavement, Dohenys stormed out of the blocks. Keith White was to the
fore having an excellent game scoring 10 points of Dohenys tally (0-7 from
frees). White’s pace and movement tormented the Glanworth full back. Dohenys
cutely left acres of space inside in the full forward line and it was ten
minutes before Glanworth afforded their full back any protection. The damage
had been done and Dohenys led 1-5 v 0-0 after 10 minutes. The goal coming from
a bullet of a shot by Eoin Lavers following a powerful run and sharp passing by
Dohenys. In truth the game was over as a contest as Dohenys had created a
strong lead. Due to a Black Card sin- binning and injuries/lack of numbers Glanworth
played almost 20 minutes of the game with 14 men. Dohenys know there will be
much tougher and sterner tests as the year progresses.
