Playing activities:
The Doheny U21 footballers defence of their West Cork title
came to abrupt end at the first hurdle of this year’s U21A Carbery football
championship when they were convincingly beaten by Carbery Rangers on a score-line
of 1-15 to 1-07. The Dohenys were missing
4 key players due to injury in Mark Buckley, Eoin Murray, Aidan O’Donovan &
Ray Jennings for this encounter. The Doheny
team that took the field, 13 players of which were from last year’s Minor A County
Championship winning side, couldn’t match the physicality of the Rosscarbery
outfit. Although playing against a stiff
breeze Carbery Rangers were quick out of the blocks & powered into a 1-04
to no score lead after 12 minutes and things were looking ominous early on for
the Dohenys men. The Dunmanway men to their
credit didn’t panic and got themselves right back into the game with a fisted
goal from Fionn Herlihy and points from the very lively Kieran Forbes, a free
from Keith White and a nice long range effort from the impressive Bill Murphy reducing
the deficit to a single point. The Ross
men tagged on a couple of points before the break, sandwiched in between was a
Cullen Barry free for the Dohenys but Rosscarbery had a two point advantage at
the interval, leading on score-line of 1-06 & 1-04.
On the resumption a Cullen Barry free reduced Carbery
Rangers lead to a single point again but that was a close as the Dohenys men
got. Carbery Rangers took complete
control around the middle third and their dynamic full forward line began to
cause the Dohenys backline serious problems. The Rosscarbery men kicked 9 points to Dohenys two points during the
remainder of the game and only for some heroic shot stopping from the Dohenys goal
keeper Stephen Daly the final score could have read a whole lot worse.
Although this was a disappointing showing from the Doheny
U21s only one player out of the starting 15 will be ineligible for the U21
grade in 2019.
