Playing activities:
Granted the senior team lost to Castlehaven 2-10 to 2-15 and
that is disappointing but every Doheny supporter leaving Rosscarbery last Saturday
evening had a great sense of pride at what they witnessed. There was a feeling that the Doheny seniors have
turned a corner with this young Doheny team. If the seniors can build on the level of
performance and commitment that was shown against the Havens last weekend then
the future is looking bright for the Dunmanway men. It must be noted that 7 of last year’s County
Minor winning side played in the game, 5 of which are still playing at minor
grade for Sam Maguires this season.
Playing against a stiff breeze in the opening half the Dohenys
were slow out of the blocks and struggled to implement their game in the opening
quarter. Although both sides trading
points early on, with the Dohenys score coming from the boot of Patrick
McCarthy, it was Castlehaven who took the initiative netting the first goal of
the game after 5 minutes and raced into a 1-05 to 1 point lead. What was encouraging from the Dunmanway side
is that they never threw in the towel and that they managed to adapt their
style of play midway through the half, carrying the ball more with support
runners, and as a result they began to unlock the Haven’s defence. Dohenys reduced the deficit to two points
with points from the impressive Fionn Herlihy and Patrick McCarthy and a major
from Jack O’Connell. Haven finished the
half strongly and led on the interval 1-07 to 1-03.
On the resumption both teams traded points in the first 5
minutes of the 2nd half with Dohenys corner forward Jamie Carroll
kicking two frees in that time. Unfortunately from a Doheny perspective Castlehaven capitalized on a
number of defensive clearances scoring 1-02 in the process to open up an eight
point lead. Dohenys again showed their resilience
and battled on with further points from Fionn Herlihy. Jerry McCarthy coolly dispatched his penalty,
after Cullen Barry had been upended in the large rectangle, to give Dohenys a
life-line but the Dohenys couldn’t claw back Castlehaven’s five point lead in
the final quarter. Keith White and Jamie
Carroll added further points for the Dohenys but Castlehaven deservedly ran out
deserved winners. This championship will
be a great learning experience for the young Dunmanway side. The Dohenys will now play Douglas in Round 2
of the Senior Football Championship but it will be July before this game be
played. Team: Darren Frazer, Barry O’Donovan, Sean Daly, Jerry O’Farrell,

In Enniskeane on Sunday evening last the Junior A football championship
clash between Dohenys and St. James was certainly a game of two halves due to
the driving wind and rain. St. James had
the aid of the elements in the first half and they took full advantage of it
and in truth the game was over as a contest after the first 10 minutes as St.
James had raced into a 1-06 to no score lead before the Dohenys side managed to
register their opening score of the game through the hard working Nathan O’Donovan.
Dohenys managed to score only one more point before half time through a David
Mawe free as they trailed St. James 1-11 to 0-02 at the break leaving
themselves with an insurmountable task in the 2nd half. Credit to the Dohenys men they fought gallantly
in the 2nd half outpointing St. James 6 points to one with minor
Bill Murphy to the fore up front for the Dohenys men but their efforts were in
vain as St. James ran out comfortable winners in the end on a score-line of 1-12 to 0-08. The fact the seniors used 19 players the
previous evening did impact greatly on the Junior team. There also was number of absentees due to
injury & work which upon their return should boost the team going forward. Team:
Darragh Farr, David O’Farrell, Kevin Cotter, Tadhg O’Leary, Johnny Collins,
Alan Murray, Tim Healy 0-01, Timmy O’Donovan, Darren Kelly, Dan McSweeney 0-02
f, Bill Murphy 0-03 (0-02f), Padraig O’Mahony, Barry McCarthy, David Mawe 0-01
f, Nathan O’Donovan 0-01 Subs Used: Stephen Collins, Ciaran Kelleher, James
Murray
All in all 37 players got a taste of championship action
over the weekend.
