There
was mixed results for the club this past week. Starting on a very
positive note the Doheny U21 hurlers have progressed to the Clona Milk U21 B
Hurling West Cork final by overcoming Bandon last Wednesday evening on a
scoreline of 2-15 to 0-09. Both sides were level at half time, 5 points
apiece, but a dominant 2nd half performance by the Dohenys ensured
victory with Kevin O’Mahony and Aidan O’Donovan getting the Doheny goals.
The
Doheny Junior footballers involvement in the Junior A Championship is over this
season. The Dohenys lost to O’Donovan Rossa 1-12 to 2-17 in
Drimoleague last Saturday evening. After a cagey opening 20 minutes the
sides were level 3 points apiece. Skibb finished the 1st half
strongly to lead at interval 0-09 to 0-06. The Doheny points coming from
Gareth Crowley (3), Tom Brady, Nathan O’Donovan & Mark Buckley.
The
Dohenys made a few changes at half time and hit the ground running upon the
resumption. Mark Buckley coolly dispatched a penalty early on to level
matters. Dohenys managed to get their noses in front temporarily when Tom
Brady kicked over a fantastic point. Skibb to their credit responded well
and turned the game on its head converting 1-03 in a 5 minute spell to put
daylight between the sides. Although Dohenys fought gallantly thereafter
with further points from Tom Brady (2) and the impressive Mark Buckley (3) an
experienced Skibbereen team kept the scoreboard ticking over and they also have
their goalkeeper to thank, who pulled off a wonder save from another Mark
Buckley penalty, to run out comfortable winners in the end. Kevin Cotter,
Gareth Crowley, Mark Buckley (hampered by injury), Nathan O’Donovan and Tom
Brady all gave noteworthy performances for the Dunmanway men on the
evening.
