The Doheny Senior footballers
remain on top of Division 3 of the County football league after a hard fought
win at home to Glanworth winning on a score-line of 1-08 to 0-07.
Glanworth buoyed by their win over Ilen Rovers last week came to Dunmanway
determined to get another victory over a West Cork senior football team but the
Dohenys team had other intentions. Glanworth playing with a high tenacity and
high press had the home side under pressure early on. However the young
Dohenys team, who were missing a number of key players, didn’t panic and
following the initial opening exchanges began to exert their own influence on
the game. Ray Jennings's goal after 20 minutes settled the home side and
from then on the men in green never relinquished the lead. The Dohenys
led by the slenderest of margins at half time 1-03 to 0-05.
It wasn’t all plain sailing for
the homeside in the 2nd half. The teams character was well and
truly tested 12 minutes after the interval when veteran Niall Hurley was sent
off for two bookable offences. Reduced to 14 men, as you often see, the
Doheny team played with a greater unity & stubbornness. The Dohenys
full back line of Jerry O’Farrell, Sean Daly and in particular Donal Rice were
immense on the night. The Dohenys held Glanworth to a mere 2 points in
the second half. It was backs to the wall stuff at times but the Dohenys
caught Glanworth on the counterattack on several occasions & kept the
scoreboard ticking over to run out eventual 4 point winners. Mark Buckley
gave another eye catching display up front and kicked the vital scores when
required. Keith White carried unbelievable amount ball & was a fantastic
link between defense & attack throughout the match. The senior team
will have a few weeks break and the focus will go back to the u21 & junior
footballers.
