U21 Championship semi final success
The Dohenys had a hard fought but a deserved win over a fancied Carbery Rangers outfit in the semi-final of the U21A West Cork football championship & in the process booked a place in the final for the second time in 3 years.  This semi-final has been described by neutrals as one of the standout footballing matches seen with quite awhile in West Cork and both teams should be commended for their contribution to this very sporting, skilful & entertaining contest.  It was played at an extremely high tempo from start to finish, leaving players & supporters alike exhausted by the time the referee blew the final whistle in the 67thminute.   The Dohenys got off to a blistering start and raced into a 5 point to no score lead, all the points coming courtesy of Mark Buckley.  The Dohenys were completely dominant in the first quarter & Carbery Rangers were left shell-shocked by Dohenys fast, open & expansive style of football which in turn created space for Mark Buckley & Fionn Herlihy to create havoc for the Ross defense.  Carbery Rangers to their credit fought their way back into the game & narrowed the gap to two points by the half time whistle with Dohenys leading at the interval 0-09 to 0-07.  Cullen Barry & Fionn Herlihy chipped in with points of their own to assist Buckley on the scoring stakes for Dohenys.    Carbery Rangers had the score-line level within minutes of the resumption.  Dohenys responded with 3 points of their own and looked to take control of the game again.  However the game was thrown on its head when Ross got a goal to level matters & followed up with a point immediately after to put their noses in front for the first time in the game.  This was a critical juncture in the game as Ross looked in the ascendancy.   However Dohenys showed unbelievable resilience at this point & fought their way back into the game to take the lead again.  Excitement was at fever pitch at his stage.  A number of points were exchanged thereafter with very little between the sides & time running out.  In fact the score-line was level 0-16 to 1-13 with five minutes to go in regulation time.  Somehow the Dohenys mustered up the energy and courage to take the command of the game to finish strongly scoring 4 consecutive points thus taking the wind out of Ross sails.  Although the sea-siders threatened to score a goal late on the Dohenys held out to win on score-line of 0-20 to 1-13.  Mark Buckley was man of the match scoring a total of 11 points.  He was ably assisted in the full forward line by the impressive Fionn Herlihy who contributed 4 points to the final tally.  Cullen Barry, who was the other Doheny player to get his name on the scoreboard, played well in midfield & drove forward with conviction when required.  In truth everyone deserves to mentioned because it was a fantastic team effort as they gave a superb footballing performance through the entire match.  However there’s a quick turn round as the Dunmanway men will face old foes O’Donovan Rossa in the West Cork Final this Sunday at 3.15pm in Castlehaven.  Dohenys will have to play to the same level of intensity and skill to have any chance against this Skibb side that has taken a number of notable scalps in Clonakilty & Castlehaven on route to the final.   Team: Stephen Daly, David Farrell, Jerry Farrell, Jason Daly, Darragh O Connor, Declan Collins, Padraig O Mahony, Gareth Crowley, Cullan Barry (0-5), Keith White, Bill Murphy, Cathal Daly, Kieran Forbes, Mark Buckley (0-11), Fionn Herlihy (0-4). Subs Used:- Jerry Collins and Nathan O Donovan.  Additional Panel Members:- Keith Forbes, Ciarán Kelleher, Darragh Collins, Cian Collins, Adrian Cronin, Alan Brickley, Ellis Farrell and Daniel Dullea

On a poignant note the Doheny GAA Club are deeply saddening by the passing of Denis (DD) Lyons of Tralee, late of Dunmanway.  DD was ever present on Doheny teams throughout the 1950s & 60s and his crowning moment is when he captained the Dohenys to win the 1966 Junior County Football Championship.  The Doheny GAA Club would like to pass on our condolences to his wife Kay & family.  DD has now passed to his eternal rest and will be rightly welcomed by the deceased members of the Doheny community that have gone before him and with them, will not be forgotten.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.  Mo chóbhrón dá chlann is dá cháirde uilig.  Is mó an chailiút dóibh suid ná dúinne.
