DOHENY NOTES - (Number of times read: 1062)

Football can be a cruel sport!   The Doheny U21s suffered a gut wrenching loss to O’Donovan Rossa in the West Cork U21A football final on Sunday last.  The Dohenys had basically one hand on the Liam Farr Cup but the concession of a goal in stoppage time handed victory to the Skibbereen men on a score-line of 1-09 to 0-10.  Granted the Dohenys never played to the lofty standards they set in their semi-final victory over Carbery Rangers but in saying that the Dunmanway side looked well in control of the game and will regret letting this one slip away.  The boys in green missed a number of scoring opportunities for points at critical stages of the game leaving the door ajar for the O’Donovan Rossa men to snatch victory in the end.

Dohenys had a stiff breeze to their backs in the opening half and in truth they didn’t capitalise enough on the advantage and only had a 2 point lead at half time 0-07 to 0-05. Although Dohenys got the opening score of the match through the impressive Gareth Crowley, the Dohenys were slow to find any fluency to their game plan.  Dohenys title ambitions were suffered a blow when they lost Declan Collins to a leg injury early on.  Skibbereen deployed a sweeper in front of the Dohenys full forward line and Dohenys found it difficult to get quality ball into their dangerous full forward unit.  It really wasn’t till the closing stages of the first half with Dohenys trailing 0-05 to 0-02 on the scoreboard that the Dunmanway side clicked into gear scoring 5 points in quick succession.  Unfortunately from a Dohenys perspective the half time whistle came too soon.

Similarly to the opening half the Dohenys got the first point of the second half off the boot of Cullen Barry.  A number of scoring opportunities were spurned by the men in green at the start of the second half and this ultimately proved costly.  It was tough kicking into the strong breeze.  Skibb reduced the deficit to a point midway through the second half before Mark Buckley extended Dohenys lead to two.  Dohenys were defending resolutely.  Jason Daly and Jerry Colllins were particularly impressive in the Dohenys’s defence.  With seven minutes remaining Skibb level matters 9 points apiece.  The game was in the melting pot and up stepped Dohenys man of the match Gareth Crowley to kick a splendid point.  It looked like a match winning score but credit to the O’Donovan Rossa men they didn’t lie down and manufactured a match winning goal late on to capture the silverware on offer.  It’s a bitter pill for the Dohenys men to swallow but many of these players will have very little time to mull over this defeat as a lot of the players will be lining out for the senior footballers who are in championship action this coming weekend.  Furthermore the county u21 championship is kicking off in 2 weeks time so the show goes on.

The Club would like to wish Declan Collins a speedy recovery.  Unfortunately for Declan he suffered a leg break during the game so will have to spend a bit of time on the sidelines recouping.

The Doheny senior footballers promotional prospects from division 3 of the county football league were suffered a blow last week when they lost to Bandon on a score-line of  0-11 to 1-10.  The Dohenys had to field without their u21 contingent and this obviously weakened the team considerably.  To their credit the Dohenys led the game for most part but again a concession of a goal with time running out handed the advantage over to Bandon who ran out victors in the end.  The Dohenys play St. Nicks in Brinny this Sunday at 2pm in the Senior football championship.
