DOHENYS V BANTRY - (Number of times read: 945)

DOHENYS CAPTAIN, WILLIAM O'BRIEN WITH REFEREE DONAL SHORTEN AND THE BANTRY CAPTAIN
The junior ‘D’ footballers were in action on Saturday evening last when they played Bantry in the West Cork final at a bitterly cold Moneyvollane pitch. The Blues with a much physically stronger and more experienced team deservedly took the honours although a young Dohenys side battled to the end. The game was probably won in the first quarter when Bantry scored 1-4 without reply as Dohenys struggled to get into the game. The latter, with Niall Hurley and David Collins doing well in the middle, had more than their share of the play in the second quarter but their light-weight forwards persisted in taking the ball into the tackle  and found scores hard to come by. James Collins did notch two fine points to leave 5 points, 1-4 to 0-2, between the sides at the break. Again in the second half Dohenys created good openings but too often overplayed the ball and were caught in possession. David Collins did take his goal well having combined  with brother Tom.  Although substitute Barry o’ Donovan kicked two good points Bantry never looked like losing this one and ran out comfortable winners on a score of 1-12 to 1-5. A full report will appear later.
