JOE HIGGINS RIP - (Number of times read: 1402)

Daniel O Donovan | Friday 5 October 2018

The Doheny GAA Club is again in mourning following the sad passing of Joe Higgins. To his wife Mairead, children Eoin, Brian, Claire & Jo-Anne, and the extended Higgins family we pass on our sincere sympathies and deepest condolences.
Joe was a Dunmanway man through and through. He was very personable character who involved himself in every aspect of community life in Dunmanway through his work with the Community Council, tidy towns, sporting life, the choir, culture & drama etc.  He was a quality person who treated everyone equally.

Joe contributed greatly to the Doheny GAA Club and to Cumann Lúthchleas Gael as a whole.  He began his playing career in St. Patricks National School and went on to play for the Dohenys in both hurling and football.  He has the distinction of being part of the Doheny U21 team that won 3 no. U21 Southwest football championships in a row 1969, 70 & 71, playing in goal for two of those years.  Joe played regularly for the Junior hurlers and footballers  throughout the 70's and early 80's.  He experienced the cut and thrust of senior football championship in 1973 when minding the net against St. Nicks in the 2nd round of the championship.  A highlight of his playing career was when he captained the Junior 3 football team to success in the Southwest final of 1978.  Joe was never found wanting on or off the pitch and was always good for a bar or two win, lose or draw.  Joe possessed an attractive tenor voice & he could entertain the masses.

Joe has now passed to his eternal rest and will be rightly welcomed by the deceased members of the Doheny community that have gone before him and with them, will not be forgotten.
