Minor Football

Sam Maguires 2-10 Bantry 0-5

Pride of place this week goes to the Minor footballers who won the Minor A football championship final in Aughaville on Sunday last.

The Sam Maguire team backboned by a number of players that were also part of the successful U-21 team started brightly and raced into a 3 point lead courtesy of points from Keith White (2) and a Cullan Barry 45’. However the rest of the 1st half was a real battle with no real flow to the game due to the high volume of frees. The lads in green did manage to preserve their 3 pt lead and the half time score board read Sam Maguire 0-6 Bantry 0-3.

The start of the 2nd half saw the sides trade points before the pivotal moment of the game arrived in the 41st minute. An interception in Sam Maguires half resulted in a lightning counter attack and after some good interplay involving Keith White and Fionn Herlihy the ball was neatly finished to the Bantry net by Kieran Forbes. As the game opened up this seemed to  suit the boys in green and when Fionn Herlihy manufactured and scored a penalty in the 44th minute the result was no longer in doubt. Points from Cullan Barry (0-2) and Keith White put icing on the cake as Sam Maguires ran out deserving winners.  It was a great win and a credit to all involved. There is some great work being done at all ages and grades in the Sam Maguire club, the challenge now is transitioning these players into the adult club.

U12 Football

The Under 12’s were  in championship action twice last week first off they overcame O Donovan Rossa in the ¼ final of the  U12A Football cup on a scoreline of Sam Maguire’s 4-9 O’Donovan Rossa 2-5.

On Monday 19th Sam Maguire’s under 12’s took on a spirited Castlehaven side. The visitors were well up for it and started at a serious pace.

The home side were very slow out of the traps and were very sluggish and tired looking.

Things were looking very bad for the home side when Castlahaven stormed into a 1.8 to 0.1  lead, however the home side started to slowly pick away a few points and one by one they started to fight their way back into the game. The excellent opening goal from Jack McSweeney really boosted the fight back, then shortly before the half time break the home side got a second goal from Paudie Crowley giving them a 4 point lead.

The visitors started the second half strongly and drove hard at a solid defence lead by Ryan Kelly however they did get a few points from a good distance out and it was point for a point for about ten minutes until Paudie Crowley got another 3 goals which really gave the home side the boost of confidence they needed. With a total of 4- 2 from Paudie and 7 Points from Shane Barry and points from Jimmy Sullivan, Oran McCarthy and Sean Murphy the home side looked home and dry with a  lead of 8 points. However this magnificent game was not over as the visitors were not giving up, they kept driving hard, then a after a few unanswered points Castlehaven buried their third goal , but luckily the final whistle arrived. The young men from Sam Maguire’s were deserving winner on a score and now play Bantry in the under 12 Division A Championship  West Cork Final.
