Sam Maguire News
Tuesday last saw the curtain come down on Sam Maguire U 16 footballers season
with the league final against Newcestown. Having lost to the same opposition in
the Championship a month earlier Sams were keen to turn the tables .However
an early Newcestown goal saw Sams trail early on and they were grateful for an
excellent save by Darragh Hayes. Once Sams settled they kicked some excellent
scores and this allied to some excellent defending saw Sams gain parity at the
short whistle on a scoreline of 1-1 to 0-4.
A major from Kieran Forbes saw
Sams open up a 3 point lead but true to form Newcestown came roaring back to
gain a 2 point lead with ten minutes remaining. However Sams introduced Alan
Brickley who was out injured for the past 3 months and with his first touch
rattled the net to give the home the lead by the slender margin of one point. Newcestown
equalised with two minutes remaining, a draw looked imminent but Alan Crowley
stepped up to split the posts giving Sams victory by the slender margin of 2-7
to 2-6 . With captain Keith Forbes accepting the trophy , the curtain
came down a long season and all involved can now take a well earned rest .
