The
Doheny senior footballers retained their senior status for the 2019 season by
beating Kiskeam on a score-line of 1-12 to 1-09 in Macroom last Saturday
evening. This was a tense affair as both teams were slow to throw caution
to the wind and as a result very little separated the teams throughout the
match. In fact it was only in stoppage time that the Dohenys threw of the
shackles and kicked 3 consecutive points to run out victors. Dohenys
started brightly and led 0-04 to 0-02 after 15 minutes with the Doheny points
coming from Fionn Herlihy (2), the busy Marky Quinn and Alan Sheehan.
Dohenys were unlucky not to be further ahead after a blistering shot for goal
from young Fionn Herlihy rattled the post. Kiskeam responded well kicking
3 unanswered points to edge in front for the half time interval.
Dohenys
traded points with Kiskeam at the start of 2nd half. The
impressive Alan Sheehan kicked a long range point to level matters 6 points
apiece. The men from Dunmanway got a bit of breathing space when Dohenys
wing back Barry O’Donovan was upended in Kiskeam’s large rectangle and Jerry
McCarthy coolly slotted home the resultant penalty. However this was
short lived as Kiskeam kicked the next point and got a major of their own to
get their noses in front. Jack O’Connell was introduced for the Dohenys
and he made an immediate impact by kicking a fantastic point. It was tic
for tac for the remainder of the regulation time as a number of long range
frees from Dohenys Alan Sheehan were cancelled out by Kiskeam. It was
going to take something special to separate the sides and it was another Doheny
substitute, Jamie Carroll, who came up with the goods by kicking a massive
point following an audacious chip up on the run. Dohenys with the bit
between their teeth capitalized on a poor kick out and Fionn Herlihy extended
their lead to 2 points. Alan Sheehan, the wizard momentarily back from
Oz, sealed the victory with another close in free. All Dohenys, players,
management and supporters made a collective sigh of relief when hearing the
final whistle.
