County U16 B1 football final

It was heartbreak for the Sam Maguire U16 footballers as they lost to Clyda Rovers 0-10 to 1-09 after extra time in the County U16 B1 football final.  Although both sides were very defensive it was an exciting & intense game from start to finish.  Sam Maguires looked in control in normal time but the game swung when influential midfielder Jerry Collins was harshly back carded with 10 minutes remaining.  Clyda gained momentum for the remainder of normal time and leveled matters to send the final into extra time.  Sam Maguires were down key players in Eilis O’Farrell and Jerry Collins for the extra time period and were dealt a sucker blow early on when Clyda struck 1-01 to open up a commanding lead.  A goal was always going to be vital in this close affair and although Sams fought gallantly for the remainder of the game and at one stage reduced the deficit to a single point, Clyda Rovers held on to be crowned County Champions.  Sam Maguires can be very proud of their performance and the desire they showed over the 80 minutes.  The team cannot be faulted as they left everything out on the pitch and nothing more could be asked of them.  Nobody likes losing County finals but on reflection it has been a good year for this team.  They won the West Region championship and league double and are still in the County league campaign.  They have improved immensely as a team as the year progressed.  Their attitude and commitment is second to none and they are a credit to themselves, their families and the Club.
