The
Doheny U21 hurlers retained their crown in the most dramatic of circumstances
by defeating Owen Gaels on a score-line of 2-13 to 2-12 in the West Cork U21B
Hurling Final. This game has to be a big contender for game of the
season! Dohenys trailed at half time by 8 points and went further behind
in the start of the 2nd half to trail by 9 points. However the
Dohenys men showed great heart, determination, resilience, patience and skill
to claw their way back into the game and deep into injury time Brian Arnopp got
the match winning goal much to the absolute delight of the Doheny team and
supporters.
The
opening 20 minutes was a cagey affair as both teams slugged it out like two
heavyweight boxers. Dohenys missed a number of score-able chances in the
first half in contrast to Owen Gaels who appeared to be a lot more efficient in
front of goal. Owen Gaels pulled away in the closing 10 minutes of the
opening half netting 2 goals. Their second goal was a converted penalty
right on the stroke of half time and Dohenys looked like they were on the ropes
trailing by 2-08 to 6 points at the half time interval. A spirited 2nd
half comeback from the men in green where Bill Murphy and Declan Collins were
to the fore ensured that the Dohenys made it 2 in a row of West Cork U21B
championship hurling titles. This game will live long in the memory
bank. Captain Aidan O’Donovan received the cup afterwards from Carbery
Board Chairman Joe Crowley.
