GLENVILLE UNDER 21 A FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT

The Doheny Under 21 Footballers began their participation in the 2020 Glenville Tournament with a comfortable win over Muskerry outfit, Iniscarra in the bottom field. Keith White operating at Centre Forward impressed and scored Dohenys opening 4 points- 3 good scores from play and one from a free- following some excellent work by Darragh Collins. Dohenys dominated the opening quarter. It took Iniscarra a while to settle into the game but when they did- they scored some fine long-range points. Just as Iniscarra seemed to be finding a foothold into the game, Dohenys reasserted their dominance and following a very good team move- Alan Crowley dispatched the ball to the Iniscarra net. Dohenys led at the break 1-05 to 0-4 points.

On the resumption- Dohenys played some good free flowing attacking football with Bill Murphy, Alan Brickley, Cathal Daly and Keith White kicking some good points. The latter’s point coming following an excellent interception from Rhys Coakley. Cullan Barry showed his ability as a place kicker converting a ’45 with plenty to spare.  Dohenys completely dominated proceedings in the Second Half but will be disappointed with the lax defending which resulted in Iniscarra pouncing for a goal.

Keith White was the stand-out performer while Jerry Collins, Cathal Daly, Rhys Coakley and Bill Murphy also performed well. The final score saw Dohenys win their First Round 1-17 to 1-8.

Darren Fraser, Aaron O Donovan, Declan Collins, Gavin Lordan, Darragh Collins, Jerry Farrell, Jerry Collins, Cullan Barry (0-1 45’) , Cathal Daly (0-2), Rhys Coakley (0-1), Keith White (0-8), Kieran Forbes, Alan Crowley (1-0), Bill Murphy (0-4), Alan Brickley (0-1)

Subs: - Ellis Farrell and Josh Burke

Dohenys continued their involvement in the Glenville Tournament with a trip to Ovens to face Eire Óg in the Second Round. With a much-changed outfit Dohenys were encouraged by their battling performance in the First Half. Eire Óg who won the Premier Minor 1 three years ago were strong opposition for a young Dohenys Under 21 team. Things looked ominous at the beginning of the game when Eire Óg were awarded a penalty with their first attack. However, Dohenys breathed a sigh of relief as the Eire Óg spot-kick was blazed off the post.

Dohenys dug-in and the opening half was a close contest against a physically imposing Eire Óg side. Jerry Collins was to fore in the first half kicking two excellent points. Josh Burke just out of Under 16 showed well with Aaron O Donovan also defending strongly. At the break Eire Óg led by a solitary point- 0-5 points to 0-4.

The Second Half began brightly for Dohenys when they found the Eire Óg net. Credit to Luke Kearney who bravely won a ball by the sideline which was vital to the Doheny goal. Winning this possession allowed Bill Murphy to supply an excellent pass to Cathal Daly who expertly finished. This was a good as it got for Dohenys in the Second Half- Eire Óg with a large panel made several changes and finished with a stronger XV than they started. Dohenys short of primary ball winners and outlets to setup attacks struggled to win possession from their own kick outs. The rest of the Second Half was played on Eire Óg’s terms and Dohenys were beaten comfortably on a score-line of 1-15 to 1-4.

Darren Fraser, David Farrell, Jason Daly, Aaron O Donovan, Keith Forbes, Jerry Farrell, Ellis Farrell, Darragh Collins, Declan Collins, Luke Kearney, Bill Murphy (0-2 Frees), Jerry Collins (0-2), Josh Burke, Alan Crowley, Daniel Dullea.

Sub:- Cathal Daly (1-0)

Dohenys involvement in the Glenville Tournament culminated in a narrow Quarter Final defeat on the road to Glanmire. Glanmire beat Dohenys on a score-line of 2-11 to 1-12.

The Under 21’s involvement in the Glenville Tournament over the last three weekends should serve as good preparation for their upcoming West Cork Championship Under 21 clash with local rivals Newcestown.
