The Doheny GAA Club are saddened by the passing of Willie
Murphy. To his wife Catriona and loving family, daughters Anna, Catherine,
Maria, son Liam and extended family we pass on our sincere sympathies and
deepest condolences.
Willie made a great contribution to the Doheny & Sam
Maguire clubs and to Cumann Lúthchleas Gael as a whole. Through his former
role as Principal of Coláiste Chairbre Willie put great emphasis in the
promotion of Gaelic football & hurling in the school. Coláiste Chairbre was
instrumental in the development of many a Doheny player over the years, some of
whom got their first taste of the red jersey of Cork through their involvement
in Cork Vocational school teams.
Willie directed and produced many a humorous and
entertaining play in St. Patricks Hall & beyond, and it must be noted on
occasions the proceeds from these plays were donated to the Sam Maguire
Club. Willie also contributed to the Annual Table Quiz helping to set
questions and diverse brain teasers, adding to the success and enjoyment of
this very important fundraiser for our underage club.
Willie had a distinct voice & spoke with great clarity
& precision. The Doheny GAA Club recognized this quality and
entrusted Willie with the role as MC at all major championship matches hosted
in Sam Maguire Park over the last 30 years. It’s sad to think we won’t
hear his voice again reverberating, through the public address system, around
Sam Maguire Park on big match days in the years to come.
There is no doubt Willie’s Civic-mindedness rubbed off
on his immediate family as they contribute immensely to the Doheny, Sam Maguire
and Ladies Gaa club, for this we are also grateful.
He has now past to his eternal rest and will be warmly welcomed by the deceased
members of the Doheny community that have gone before him and with them, will
not be forgotten.
